Emerald is a variety of the mineral Beryl (Beryllium Aluminium Silicate), coloured its signature green by trace amounts of chromium and vanadium. It rates 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs hardness scale — softer than Sapphire or Ruby — and almost always contains natural surface-reaching fractures known as jardin, which makes it noticeably more delicate and prone to chipping if knocked.
