Coloured by chromium, like Ruby, but at a lighter saturation — the boundary between Pink Sapphire and Ruby is defined purely by depth of colour, since both are the same mineral.

Displays a blue-purple body colour with a distinctive blood-red or crimson undertone, caused by a combination of iron and chromium — its Hindi name, meaning 'bloody Neelam', refers directly to this undertone.

Star Sapphire

• Purple Sapphire (Khooni Neelam) is rarer still, requiring a precise combination of iron and chromium to produce its signature crimson-tinged blue-purple hue — a natural pairing that occurs far less often than standard blue Corundum.
